CHAPTER 01

遭遇地面袭击 Encountering a Ground Attack

艰难地穿过三个曲折而狭长的甬道,一只机器小猫跌跌撞撞地滚入了地堡的书房。这是一只黄色金属外壳的机器小猫,方方的脑袋、方方的身子,关节灵活的四肢,两只圆圆的大眼像探照灯,事实上这对眼睛的探测功能可比探照灯强多了,只是此时,这对眼睛没了平日的神采,空洞而无光。

这只机器小猫名叫抓抓猫,当它噼里啪啦地摔倒在书房地板上时,它的主人宋明明正在研究一个悬浮在半空的三维全息投影地图,抓抓猫搞出来的动静着实把她吓了一跳。

宋明明是个年仅14岁的小姑娘,面容苍白、身材瘦削,一双凤眸如点漆般熠熠生辉,一把马尾束在脑后,看起来弱不禁风但又聪明伶俐。

半年前,一场持续了三天的连环核爆毁灭了大半个地球,一些有先见之明的人及时逃入事先建好的末日地堡才得以幸存。宋明明和抓抓猫也是如此。

“抓抓!”宋明明望向四仰八叉躺在地上的抓抓猫,皱起眉头:“你这是怎么啦?”

抓抓猫一声不吭,一动不动,就像一只死猫......呃,准确地说,就像一只死了的机器小猫。

宋明明感觉不妙,急忙跑去查看,只见抓抓猫的电量已在红色报警状态,随时可能断电,而它的一只胳膊已与肩部脱臼,仅凭几根极细的钢丝连在一起,浑身的金属外壳还有不少被重力撞击而成的浅坑。

宋明明倒吸一口凉气,抓抓猫执行地面探测任务已有一个月,这是第一次负伤归来。

宋明明立刻跑去把充电桩拖过来,给抓抓猫插上电。然后,她又跑去拿了工具箱,仔细查看抓抓猫的伤情。宋明明在做这些事的时候,心脏怦怦狂跳,好在她有一种与生俱来的临危不乱的素质,越是紧张,越是能逼迫自己冷静并有条不紊地处理事务。

一分钟的快充足以让抓抓猫恢复基础运行,于是宋明明点击抓抓猫的记忆回放按钮,快速浏览它这一天的经历,以此查明它受伤的原因。

抓抓猫这一天的见闻投影在空气中,就像在播放一部第一视角的电影。

首先出现的是一只到处乱跑的闹钟,以及抓抓猫呼哧呼哧的出气声和稀里哗啦的各种磕碰声。抓抓猫的每个早晨就从追逐这只闹钟开始,抓到闹钟才能关掉讨厌的闹铃声。

闹铃关闭后,抓抓猫眼前出现了打着哈欠揉着眼睛的宋明明,她嘟囔着说:“抓抓,你今天用了5分钟才抓到闹钟。”

抓抓猫奶声奶气地回答:“妙!不管花了几分钟,能抓到闹钟就是好猫!——今天早饭有银鱼干吃吗?”

宋明明用食指敲了敲抓抓猫的额头:“大馋猫!当然有啦!今天的工作会很辛苦,你要多吃一点哦!”

抓抓猫最爱吃的银鱼干其实就是能量块,即高能电池。

宋明明的父亲是中国科学院环境研究所的所长,在那次规模空前的大核爆发生前,父亲把宋明明安排到老家宋家村生活,还送了机器小猫“抓抓猫”给宋明明作伴。

宋家村有一个面积约6平方公里的银湖,沿湖花树似锦,风光秀美。湖中有零星几块滩涂,每逢春日,那是吸引水鸟、野鸭飞来繁衍休憩的地方。而到了夏天,银湖会被调皮的孩子们搅扰得热闹非凡,男孩子们最爱光着屁股跳到湖里嬉戏,惹得大人们经常不安地沿着湖岸呼喊这些小猴子早些回家。秋风乍起之时,银湖又是村里姑娘、大婶们的天地,她们划着小船笑着唱着在湖里采菱角,贪嘴的人将刚采下的菱角剥开生吃,鲜嫩清香的滋味比煮熟的口感好得多呢!萧瑟的冬季虽然是银湖最安静的时候,不过,偶尔极寒天气来袭,银湖的水面结下厚冰,那么,溜冰、打雪仗的人们又会把银湖变成一个喧闹的游乐场了。四季更替,物换星移,银湖是宋家村不变的快乐源泉。

银湖特产一种银色的小鱼,宋明明常常带着抓抓猫去钓鱼,有时候能钓得满满一桶,一时吃不完就做成银鱼干。抓抓猫最爱帮宋明明剖鱼了。抓抓猫的胳膊是一个万能工具箱,需要什么工具就抽出来当爪子。抓抓猫会用一个锋利的小尖刀来把鱼剖开、剔除内脏,它的手法非常熟练和快速,不一会儿就能把一大桶鱼处理干净。宋明明用盐水把剖好的鱼腌上几个小时,然后用绳子和钩子把鱼挂起来晾在屋檐下,三天后,银鱼干就做成了。每天早晨,抓抓猫看着宋明明就着银鱼干喝着热气腾腾的大碗白粥,别提多香啦!抓抓猫总是看得眼都直了,如果它有口水,一定会流得满地都是!为了安慰抓抓猫,宋明明就把它的能量块做成银鱼干的样子,这让抓抓猫非常开心,夸说这是世界上最好吃的银鱼干!

这天,抓抓猫吃完银鱼干做的能量块,穿上防辐射的工作服,穿过三个甬道,打开地堡的密闭舱门,进入了大核爆后满目疮痍的地面世界。

半年前发生的大核爆不但摧毁了人类居住的绝大部分地面建筑,核辐射还通过空气和水循环在地球不断扩散。人类及其他地球生物的死亡不计其数。

就在大核爆发生时,宋明明接到父亲的电话,让她带着抓抓猫立刻进入地堡。在院子的地下极深处,建有一个足以应付大核爆的末日地堡,里面的生活物资一应俱全,至少可以生活三年。

幸存的人们在地堡中仍能通过计算机网络联系,大家虽然不能自由往来,却可以在社交网络上互通讯息。由于地堡里的物资终有耗尽的时候,幸存的人们迫切需要重回地面,或者起码要从地面获取未被污染的物资。于是,探明地面污染的确切状况,成了当务之急,而这样的任务只能委派机器人去做。幸存的人们身边有各种各样的机器人:看护机器人、管家机器人、伴侣机器人、宠物机器人等等,所有的机器人都被安排了地面探测任务,抓抓猫也被分派了任务。

抓抓猫第一次回到地面的时候,震惊得几乎快要短路了,原本柳暗花明、鸡犬相闻的宋家村,已是一片死一般寂静的荒村。银湖不复往日胜景,深黑色的湖面漂满死鱼和藻类,风过处,湖面死水微澜,沉沉的恶臭随之飘来荡去。

没有活的人,没有活的动物!——这是抓抓猫第一天的工作报告。

宋明明观看抓抓猫当天的记忆回放时,不禁崩溃大哭。更糟糕的是,她和父亲也失去了联系,面对如此骇人的末日情景,一个14岁的小姑娘只能和一只机器小猫抱头而泣。

接下来的日子,抓抓猫每天到地面执行探测任务。由于探测需要地毯式进行,收集每一寸土壤和草木的污染数据,一个月的时间,抓抓猫完成的探测范围只有宋家村的百分之一。

而这天,当抓抓猫探测到一片小树林时,忽然感觉身后有一股浓重的血腥气袭来,还没等它反应过来,一团毛茸茸的东西呼啸着把它扑倒在地,随即开始死命撕咬它的臂膀。抓抓猫定睛一看,竟然是一只拖着长长口水,呲着带血獠牙的大狗。狗的面部已经浮肿变形,两只眼睛布满发黑的血丝,如同两个生锈的铜铃。抓抓猫从来没有打过架,体内也没有植入打架程序,一时不知所措,只好大声呼叫:“要和平,不要打架啊!”而大狗根本不理会抓抓猫的大喊大叫,撕咬得越来越急躁。突然,只听“砰”地一声巨响,大狗应声倒地。抓抓猫趁机挣脱纠缠,奋力爬起来,只见大狗的面部被炸得血肉模糊,只剩出的气,没有进的气了。原来,大狗咬到了抓抓猫的一块高能电池,引起了爆炸。惊魂未定的抓抓猫迅速修复好破损的辐射防护服,拍了拍胸脯,庆幸道:“还好我有世界上最好吃的银鱼干!”

大狗的脖子上有个项圈,抓抓猫认出这是村里人家的狗,名叫大黑,原本是只很神气的德国黑背牧羊犬,平时虽然不太亲近陌生人,但是训练有素,从来不曾有过攻击行为。这时抓抓猫注意到手里的辐射探测器格格地叫个不停,原来,大黑已被辐射变异,而它的攻击性也许是变异引起的,也许是极度饥饿引起的,也许大黑并不是宋家村唯一存活的变异生物......

此时天色已暗,冷风刮擦着树林,发出呜呜的声音,仿佛鬼哭狼嚎,抓抓猫吓得喵呜大叫着向地堡方向拼命狂奔。

跑到地堡入口,抓抓猫脱掉沉重的辐射防护服,用最后的力气打开密封舱,然后就像本章开头那样连滚带爬地回到了地堡。

After struggling through three winding and narrow corridors, a little robot cat tumbled and rolled into the study of the underground bunker. It was a robot cat with a yellow metal shell, a square head, a square body, and flexible jointed limbs. Its two big round eyes were like searchlights—in fact, their detection power was far stronger than any searchlight. But at this moment, those eyes had lost their usual sparkle and were empty and dull. This robot cat was named Zhuazhua. When it crashed and fell with a clatter onto the study floor, its owner Song Mingming was studying a three-dimensional holographic map floating in mid-air. The noise Zhuazhua cat made truly startled her. Song Mingming was a fourteen-year-old girl with a pale face and a slender figure. Her phoenix eyes shone like polished lacquer, and her hair was tied in a ponytail at the back. She looked fragile, yet she was clever and quick-witted. Half a year earlier, a chain of nuclear explosions lasting three days had destroyed most of the Earth. Only those with foresight who had fled in time into pre-built doomsday bunkers had survived. Song Mingming and Zhuazhua cat were among them. “Zhuazhua!” Song Mingming looked at the cat lying sprawled on the floor and frowned. “What’s wrong with you?” Zhuazhua cat made no sound and did not move, just like a dead cat… or, to be precise, just like a dead robot cat. Song Mingming sensed something was wrong and hurried over to check. She saw that Zhuazhua’s battery was already in the red warning state and could shut down at any moment. One of its arms had been dislocated from the shoulder and was connected only by a few extremely thin steel wires. Its metal shell was covered with many shallow dents caused by hard impacts. Song Mingming drew in a sharp breath. Zhuazhua had been carrying out ground detection missions for a full month. This was the first time it had returned injured. She immediately ran to drag over the charging station and plugged Zhuazhua in. Then she fetched her toolbox and carefully examined its wounds. While doing all this, her heart pounded wildly, but luckily she possessed an inborn ability to stay calm in crisis. The more nervous she felt, the more she forced herself to remain steady and handle things in an orderly way. One minute of fast charging was enough to restore Zhuazhua’s basic functions. Song Mingming then pressed the memory playback button and quickly reviewed its experiences of the day to find out how it had been hurt. Zhuazhua’s sights and sounds from that day projected into the air, just like playing a first-person movie. First appeared a little alarm clock running all over the place, along with Zhuazhua’s panting breaths and the clattering sounds of bumps and crashes. Every morning for Zhuazhua began with chasing this alarm clock. Only by catching it could the annoying ringing be turned off. After the alarm was silenced, the yawning and eye-rubbing Song Mingming appeared before Zhuazhua’s eyes. She mumbled, “Zhuazhua, it took you five minutes to catch the alarm today.” Zhuazhua answered in its soft, childish voice, “Mew! No matter how many minutes it takes, catching the alarm means I’m a good cat!—Is there silver-fish jerky for breakfast today?” Song Mingming tapped Zhuazhua’s forehead with her index finger. “You greedy little cat! Of course there is! Today’s work will be hard, so you must eat more!” The silver-fish jerky that Zhuazhua loved most was actually energy blocks—high-powered batteries. Song Mingming’s father had been the director of the Environmental Research Institute of the Academy of Sciences. Before that unprecedented series of nuclear explosions, he had arranged for Song Mingming to live in their ancestral home in Song Village and had given her the robot cat Zhuazhua as a companion. Song Village had a silver lake about six square kilometers in size. Along its shores, flowering trees bloomed like brocade, and the scenery was beautiful. Scattered sandbars in the lake attracted water birds and wild ducks to breed and rest every spring. In summer the lake would be stirred into lively chaos by playful children. Boys loved to jump naked into the water and splash about, causing the adults to call anxiously along the shore for those little monkeys to come home early. When the autumn wind rose, the silver lake became the domain of the village girls and women. They rowed small boats, laughing and singing as they gathered water chestnuts. The greedy ones would peel open freshly picked chestnuts and eat them raw—the fresh, tender fragrance tasted even better than when cooked. In the bleak winter the lake was at its quietest, yet when extreme cold arrived and thick ice formed, skaters and snowball fighters would turn the silver lake into a noisy playground once more. Through the changing seasons, the silver lake remained the unchanging source of joy for Song Village. The silver lake produced a special kind of small silver fish. Song Mingming often took Zhuazhua fishing. Sometimes they caught a whole bucketful. What they could not eat at once was made into silver-fish jerky. Zhuazhua loved helping Song Mingming clean the fish most of all. Its arms were a universal toolbox; whatever tool was needed could be drawn out to serve as a paw. Zhuazhua would use a sharp little blade to slit the fish open and remove the insides. Its movements were skilled and swift, and in no time a whole bucket of fish would be cleaned. Song Mingming would pickle the cleaned fish in salt water for several hours, then hang them up with string and hooks under the eaves. After three days the silver-fish jerky was ready. Every morning Zhuazhua cat watched Song Mingming eat the jerky with a steaming big bowl of plain porridge and thought it smelled wonderful! Its eyes would go straight with longing. If it could drool, the floor would certainly have been covered. To comfort Zhuazhua cat, Song Mingming shaped its energy blocks to look exactly like silver-fish jerky. This made Zhuazhua very happy, and it always praised them as the most delicious silver-fish jerky in the world! That day, after eating its silver-fish-jerky energy blocks, Zhuazhua cat put on its radiation-proof work suit, passed through the three corridors, opened the sealed hatch of the bunker, and stepped out into the scarred surface world left by the great nuclear explosions. The great nuclear blasts half a year earlier had not only destroyed most of the buildings on the surface where humans lived; nuclear radiation had also spread continuously across the Earth through air and water cycles. Countless humans and other living creatures had died. At the moment the great nuclear explosions began, Song Mingming received a phone call from her father telling her to take Zhuazhua and enter the bunker at once. Deep underground in the courtyard was a doomsday bunker strong enough to withstand the great nuclear blasts. It was stocked with all the necessities of life and could support them for at least three years. The survivors in the bunkers could still contact one another through computer networks. Although they could not travel freely, they could exchange news on social networks. Because the supplies in the bunkers would eventually run out, the survivors urgently needed to return to the surface, or at least obtain uncontaminated materials from above ground. Therefore, accurately mapping the pollution on the surface became the most urgent task, and such work could only be assigned to robots. The survivors had all kinds of robots around them—care robots, housekeeping robots, companion robots, pet robots, and more. All of them were given ground detection missions, and Zhuazhua was assigned one too. The first time Zhuazhua returned to the surface, it was so shocked it almost short-circuited. The once-lively Song Village, where willows had shaded the paths and chickens and dogs had called to one another, had become a dead, silent wasteland. The silver lake no longer held its former beauty. Its deep-black surface was covered with dead fish and algae. When the wind passed, the stagnant water barely rippled, and a heavy stench drifted about. No living people, no living animals!—that was Zhuazhua cat’s work report on the first day. When Song Mingming watched the memory playback of that day, she broke down and wept. Even worse, she had also lost contact with her father. Faced with such a terrifying doomsday scene, a fourteen-year-old girl could only hold her robot cat and cry together. In the days that followed, Zhuazhua went to the surface every day to carry out detection missions. Because the detection had to be done inch by inch, collecting pollution data from every bit of soil and plant, in one month’s time the area Zhuazhua had surveyed was only one percent of Song Village. On this particular day, when Zhuazhua was detecting in a small grove of trees, it suddenly felt a thick smell of blood coming from behind. Before it could react, a furry mass came whistling through the air and knocked it to the ground, then began frantically biting its arm. Zhuazhua looked carefully and saw it was a big dog with long strings of drool hanging from its mouth and bloodstained fangs bared. The dog’s face was already swollen and deformed, and its two eyes were full of blackened blood vessels, looking like a pair of rusty bronze bells. Zhuazhua had never fought before and had no combat programs installed. For a moment it did not know what to do and could only shout loudly, “We want peace, not fighting!” But the big dog paid no attention to Zhuazhua’s cries and bit more and more frantically. Suddenly there came a loud “bang,” and the dog fell to the ground. Zhuazhua seized the chance to break free and struggled to its feet. It saw that the dog’s face had been blown into a bloody mess; it was breathing its last. It turned out the dog had bitten one of Zhuazhua’s high-energy battery blocks and caused an explosion. Still shaken, Zhuazhua cat quickly repaired its damaged radiation suit, patted its chest, and said with relief, “Luckily I carry the most delicious silver-fish jerky in the world!” There was a collar around the dog’s neck. Zhuazhua recognized it as a dog from a family in the village, named Big Buddy. It had originally been a proud German Shepherd, usually not very friendly to strangers, but well-trained and never given to attacking. At this moment Zhuazhua cat noticed that the radiation detector in its paw was clicking nonstop. Big Buddy had already been mutated by radiation. Its aggressiveness might have been caused by the mutation, or by extreme hunger… or perhaps Big Buddy was not the only mutated living creature still surviving in Song Village… By then the sky had grown dark. A cold wind scraped through the trees, making a howling sound like ghosts crying and wolves wailing. Terrified, Zhuazhua cat meowed loudly and ran with all its might toward the bunker. When it reached the bunker entrance, Zhuazhua cat took off its heavy radiation suit, used the last of its strength to open the sealed hatch, and then, just as at the beginning of this story, tumbled and crawled back into the bunker.
CHAPTER 02

地堡幸存者的日常 Daily Life of the Bunker Survivors

宋明明认出攻击抓抓猫的是大黑,松了一口气——幸亏不是什么太特别的妖魔鬼怪。她关掉了抓抓猫的记忆录影,开始修复抓抓猫受损的身体。

此时抓抓猫已经充满了电,又恢复了话痨的本性。宋明明用一把小巧的焊枪给抓抓猫修理臂膀,抓抓猫则滔滔不绝、翻来覆去地讲述大黑袭击它的时候多么可怕、以前的大黑多么神气以及大黑这样死去多么可惜,同时随着焊枪的滋滋声一惊一乍地大呼小叫。需要专心致志焊接电路的宋明明忍不住喝止道:“抓抓!你再不闭嘴我就把你的声音关了!”每当这种时候,抓抓猫只好自己把声音关了,如果不关,它还是忍不住要讲话的。

宋明明埋头工作了大半个小时,终于把抓抓猫的臂膀修复完毕。她长长地舒了口气,对抓抓猫说:“好啦,可以起来了,小啰嗦鬼。”

抓抓猫从地上一跃而起,晃晃胳膊,动动爪子,完好如初。

可是......抓抓猫上下打量了一下自己身上大大小小的浅坑,神情有点不开心。

宋明明一边收拾工具,一边头也不抬地说:“抓抓,想要修复外壳可不容易,等我有空的时候给你做一套新的,不过,要很久才能完成哦!”

抓抓猫愁眉苦脸地问:“要多久呀?”

宋明明想了想,答道:“因为我有更重要的工作要做,而帮你臭美是相对次要的工作——当然,臭美对你来说很重要——所以,我争取在你生日的时候完工,好吗?”

“我的生日是7月30日15点10分,距离现在还有81天20小时37分。”抓抓猫眨了眨眼睛就算出来了,随即欢呼道:“太好了!今年的生日好值得期待呀!”

宋明明笑着敲了敲抓抓猫的脑袋道:“唉,我说,你这只机器小猫怎么这么多臭毛病呢?”

抓抓猫仰着脸傲娇地回答:“爸爸说,不完美才会可爱呀!”

宋明明笑道:“好吧,我承认,你确实很可爱,你是爸爸给我的最好的礼物!没有之一!——现在,我饿了,你去做饭吧,顺便测试一下你的功能是不是都正常,好吗?”——由于好奇的抓抓猫每回看宋明明吃饭都馋得要命,宋明明便给它输入了各种各样的食谱,涵盖了全球各地美食文化的精髓,就这样把抓抓猫变成了特级大厨,无论什么食材,抓抓猫转眼就能做出色香味俱全的美味佳肴。

抓抓猫一听要做饭就开心极了,连忙答应:“嗯嗯!今天你想吃什么?你昨天吃了炒豆芽,前天吃了南瓜饼,大前天吃了蚝油生菜,大大前天吃了拔丝土豆,大大大前天吃了蒜蓉拍黄瓜......”

“那今天做个荤菜吧!”宋明明打断喋喋不休的抓抓猫:“韭菜炒鸡蛋好吗?”

“好呀!那干脆做韭菜炒鸡蛋馅儿的饺子吧!”抓抓猫摩拳擦掌起来。

“哎呀,这么好?”宋明明拍了拍抓抓猫的肩膀:“那有劳你了,我的大厨师!”

“哼哼!”抓抓猫得到夸奖就无比得意,于是昂首挺胸、大摇大摆地去厨房了。

读者也许会奇怪,为什么宋明明和抓抓猫在与世隔绝的地堡里还能吃到这么丰富的食物呢?这得从这个地堡的设计说起。

地球生物的生长,需要三个必备要素:水、阳光、空气。

先说水。如果宋家村的水被污染,那么自然界的水万万不能进入地堡。因此,地堡的水只能来自事先存储的洁净水和在地堡中制造的合成水。所谓合成水就是让氢气和氧气在一定条件下发生化学反应而生成H₂O,即水。无论是洁净水和合成水,都非常宝贵,必须加以循环利用。听起来有点恶心,宋明明的尿液一小部分用来滴灌地堡中种植的各种蔬菜,大部分则循环利用为饮用水,由于设备先进,尿液转换的饮用水相当干净,并且循环利用率高达98%。因此,只要小心节约,地堡的用水不成问题。

再说阳光。地堡的顶部有三层天花板,最接近外部地面的第一层是具有完全防辐射功能的水泥板,第二层是具有部分防辐射功能的特种玻璃,第三层是无防辐射功能的普通玻璃。地堡周边的辐射物是随风而至、随风而散,根据室外辐射探测装置获得的数据,地堡的控制系统会自动选择合适的天花板。比如,如果外界辐射很强,那么,第一层水泥板就会严丝合缝地盖在地堡顶部;如果外界有辐射,但辐射物不强并且可以被第二层防辐射的厚玻璃挡掉,那么控制系统就会单独使用第二层天花板,这样会有适量的光线进入地堡,有利于地堡内生物的生长;如果外界没有辐射,那么控制系统只用第三层普通玻璃做天花板,让阳光满满地照入地堡。——如果一连几天都必须使用水泥天花板,宋明明就会打开室内的太阳灯来模拟太阳照射。所以地堡不缺阳光这一生存要素。

然后说说空气,之所以在地堡内种植蔬菜,不仅仅因为吃新鲜蔬菜可以补充人体需要的营养成分,更为重要的是,蔬菜可以产生光合作用,从而保证地堡内的氧气供应。当然,在外界空气没有辐射之忧时,宋明明会打开地堡的通风系统,让安全的空气进入。

综上,地堡生存必备的三要素都有了,不过,还有两样东西是维持生命不可或缺的,即:食物和能源。
